HINSDALE - Funeral services were held at 2 Monday afternoon in the Hinsdale Methodist church for Verner T. Hartley, 73, longtime resident of the community. The Rev. James Else preached the funeral sermon and Mrs. Harmon Tuttle and Mrs. John Rosendahl sang, accompanied by Mrs. August Enseleit.
Burial was in Hillview cemetery. Pallbearers were John Dartman, E. F. Simmons, John Amestoy, Dave Hershey, Roy Hatton and Jack Neuman. The Peterson mortuary of Glasgow was in charge.
Mr. Hartley died in a Kalispell hospital Sept. 13 following a five-month illness with lung cancer. Death was caused directly by a heart ailment. He had been in failing health for several years.
Vern Hartley was born Jan. 7, 1878 in Scrambler, Minn. He spent his early life there and married Artie Noel in Fosston, Minn., Sept. 20, 1899. She died Sept. 20, 1911.
He married Mary Bjontegard, also in Fosston, June 14, 1913.
They came to Montana from Minnesota in 1915 and he homesteaded north of Hinsdale, living there until 1933. They then moved to Hinsdale for several years. Mrs. Hartley died Jan. 25, 1937.
Mr. Hartley had made his home in Hinsdale until the last several years, when he had spent some time in Glasgow.
Survivors are five sons, Howard Hartley of Kalispell, Lloyd Hartley and Lester Hartley of Polson, Erton Hartley of Portland and Harland Hartley of Kalispell; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Gould of Kalispell Mrs. Zelda Garr of Glasgow, Mrs. Harold Brown (Erma) of Hinsdale and Mrs. Paul Reber (Velma) of Helena; 23 grandchildren. four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Louise Hainer of Bend, Ore. Three sons, Earl Hartley. Roland Hartley and an infant son, died.
All of the children were here for the funeral.
