NOTE: Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Purdy, was mentioned as a possible daughter of John Ogden (of Rye) by Donald Lines Jacobus (History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield; volume 1, page 496; 1930). However, there is no primary evidence that she was an Ogden.

One of the witnesses to the will of Joseph Purdy (will book 7, pages 598-600) was "Elizabeth Ogden" who could not write her name but instead signed with a mark ("H"). This witness was most likely Elizabeth (Miller) Ogden, wife of David Ogden. Unfortunately, the mark ("H") has been misinterpreted by some as having been a middle initial of the wife of the testator. Her Ancestral File Number is CT1Q-1D.

     John Ogden was born in 1625 at Bingley, Metropolitan Borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.² He married Judith Budd in 1655. John Ogden died on 7 August 1682 at Rye, Westchester Co., New York.² He was buried at Budd Burying Ground, Rye, Westchester Co., New York.²

     Joyce Lynn Ogden was born on 2 January 1956 at Benton Harbor, Berrien Co., Michigan. She married William Roger Stinchcomb, son of James Frances Stinchcomb and Wanda Joy Showalter, on 23 June 1979 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan. Joyce Lynn Ogden died on 26 November 2012 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at age 56. Erica Elsa Ohrndorf immigrated in 1925 to New York Harbor, New York, New York.¹ She emigrated on 9 November 1925 from Hamburg, Germany. She was naturalized in August 1941 at Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. She retired in 1984.¹ She lived in January 2006 at Apple Valley, San Bernardino Co., California.²

Erica Elsa Thotos turns 100
East Prussia-born woman came to U.S. with family in 1925

APPLE VALLEY — Erica Elsa Thotos, who immigrated from East Prussia to the U.S. via New York Harbor in 1925, celebrates her 100th birthday this week.

A resident of Jess Ranch in Apple Valley, Thotos' birthday is Tuesday, but on Sunday, her family had an early birthday celebration for her at Mama Carpino's in Apple Valley.

The birthday girl also plans to celebrate her big day with friends this Friday at Jess Ranch.

The “sharp-minded” Thotos lives alone, attends community functions, plays cards twice a week and participates in Bunco and Bingo, said her friend and secretary of the Jess Ranch Activity Committee Terry “Bunny” Stockman.

"There have been so many changes in my life, but some of the biggest would be space exploration, medical advances, television and computer capabilities,” said Thotos, as she spoke of her life.

When asked about her secret to longevity, Thotos said, "If you have a problem, then find a way to solve it, but don't dwell on it. Get on with life."

Born in the German town of Boegschen, Thotos' family boarded the RMS Arabic II in the fall of 1925 with dreams of starting a new life in America.

Knowing of the RMS Titanic disaster in 1912, Thotos said she does not remember her parents saying that they were afraid of ship travel in 1925, but did say that they were focused on coming to the U.S.

As Thotos stood with her parents on the ship’s deck and looked into the distance, her dreams of living in America began to materialize as the Statue of Liberty emerged from the mist.

“Ohrndorf is Erica's maiden name and she was called Erika while a child in Germany, but the spelling of the name was changed to Erica,” Stockman said. “After the family emigrated to the United States, her mother told her that the spelling of Erica was more American sounding."

After the family settled in Chicago, Thotos began her formal education and graduated with honors. She went to work, married Curtis Fuller, and started her family before moving West with her husband in search of a better climate and opportunity. She and her husband settled in Long Beach.

"Erica and Curtis divorced by mutual agreement in 1959. He has since passed away," Stockman said. “Erica remarried George Thotos in 1960. This union lasted until George died in 2006."

After she arrived in California, Thotos went to work for Shea Homes at the head office in Compton. She worked in payroll and as a cost accounting clerk until her retirement in 1984. George Thotos worked for Procter and Gamble as a lab analyst and shipping supervisor, Stockman said.

After retirement in 1984 and a trip to the High Desert, Erica and her husband purchased a new home at Jess Ranch.

Thotos became active in The Jess Ranch Players both as a director, costumer and an actress. She volunteered around the community until her retirement from volunteer work at the age of 96.

In the early 1960s, Thotos volunteered for a regional theater in Long Beach and performed as an actress. She also volunteered in some management capacity at the theater.

“When she retired from volunteer work, Erica was teaching a woman’s stretch class,” Stockman said. “She also voluntarily gave up driving that same year. Most of us find her to be pretty amazing at her advanced age.”

Thotos was featured in a 2001 Daily Press article when she was awarded the Joanee Award by the Jess Ranch Players for her service.

She is the mother of three children. Her surviving child, Paul and his wife, Elsie, Fuller, and their 8 children, along with Erica's 14 great-grandchildren had the chance to visit her this week, Stockman said.

     Vincent Gerald Oliver Sr. was born on 24 February 1908 at Eldred, McKean Co., Pennsylvania. He married Barbara Lucelia Hillick, daughter of Francis Xavier Hillick and Sidney Virginia Brewer, on 27 May 1939 at Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware. Vincent Gerald Oliver Sr. died on 30 March 1988 at Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., North Carolina, at age 80.² He was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Ithaca, Tompkins Co., New York.²
