Born in San Francisco to Dr. William Evert Smith and Anita Mary (Giblin) Smith, Bill graduated from San Francisco State with a BS and a Masters in Education. He served in the Army during WWII hiking "from the Chanel to the Rhine". Moving to Concord in 1951 to work for the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, he married Barbara Jean Johnson in 1952. He worked at Diablo Vista, Fair Oaks, Bel-Air, Riverview, Oak Grove and retired as principal in 1982 from El Dorado Intermediate with 33 years of service.
Bill spent happy years hiking, backpacking, tide pooling, square dancing, bowling, and sailing with friends and family. He volunteered during retirement and had a willing hand to help others.
He is survived by his wife Barbara; four children, Stuart (Brenda), Susan (Michael), Stacy, Shannon (Russell); four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister Annabelle Hays and brother Stanley (Marie). He is predeceased by his brother Robert Smith (Gail) and grandson Nathan Smith. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Pittsburg Yacht Club on October 26th at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to Hospice of the East Bay or your favorite charity.
