Fred Thomas Hooper, 86, of Westminster, died unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 18, at his residence.

Born June 16, 1925 in Franklinville, he was the son of the late William Thomas Hooper and Lilly Pickett Hooper. He was the husband of Betty Ecker Hooper, who died in 2005.

He was a 1943 graduate of Mount Airy High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in the European Theater and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was formerly employed with Beacon Steel and Mathias Monuments and retired from Rowan Controller, all of Westminster. In 1956, he became a sales representative with Nationwide Advertising Co., of Arlington, Texas. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New Windsor, where he had previously served on the Administrative Council and as a trustee. He was a charter member of the New Windsor fire company, a member of the Pleasant Valley fire company, Westminster Coin Club, V.F.W. Post 467 and was a past president of the Carroll County Fire Police. He faithfully supported his organizations and others by selling chances and raffles to raise funds for many projects. He enjoyed gardening and working outdoors and previously bowled with St. Paul's church team and the New Windsor fire company team.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Petersen and husband Sam, of DePere, Wis; four sons, Richard Hooper and wife Gail, of New Windsor; Dale Hooper, of Florida; Gary Hooper and wife Dawn, of Wakefield, Va., and Jeff Hooper and wife Johnnie of Westminster; 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Susan I. Hooper, and a son-in-law, Carl Blankenship.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where fire company members will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. Chris Brammer, of Hampstead Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Taylorsville United Methodist Cemetery.
