Jeffrey Noel, 70, of Stephen, Minnesota passed away at North Valley Health Center in Warren, Minnesota on Wednesday, December 26, 2018.

Jeff was born in Thief River Falls, MN on October 30, 1948. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. Thereafter he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jeff was married to Peggy Noel (Breiland) on December 4, 1971. Jeff was proud of his own electrical business (Noel Electric) that has been operating for more than 40 years.

He was a hard worker and enjoyed his work tremendously. He loved spending time with family and friends, golfing, watching is grandkids' activities, ice fishing, and the Annual Fourtown MEA Weekend was his #1 vacation destination. Throughout the years Jeff served on the church board, fire department, legion board, coached golf, and was Marshall of Stephen Appreciation Days parade.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Matthew, Stephen; a daughter, Andrea (Mark) Olsonawski, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren Madison, Noel, Aaron, Ryan and Kate; and a sister, Linda Lawson, Fargo, ND. Jeff is preceded in death by his parents Don and Tress Noel, brother Anthony Noel, and brother-in-law Robert Lawson.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, December 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church at Stephen. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Rev. Michael Schendel, presiding. Military honors will be accorded by the Stephen American Legion and the Minnesota National Guard. Visitation will be held at First Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 30th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.

Joy Diane Noel Gillespie, born on October 25, 1944, in New York City, NY, to Duane and Alverda (Lund) Noel, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Kristin Ostercamp officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Joy was raised in Thief River Falls, MN, where she attended Knox Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962. Shortly after high school, she began working at N.W. Bell and later for School District 564. On October 5, 1963, she married Neil Gillespie, and together they built a life filled with love and cherished memories over their 62 years of marriage.

A woman of many talents and passions, Joy enjoyed crafts, baking, teaching ceramics, gardening, traveling, motorcycle trips with Neil, and attending her grandchildren's activities. She was also a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 117.

Joy is survived by her devoted husband Neil; son Steve Gillespie of Thief River Falls, MN; and three beloved grandchildren: Elle Gillespie of Anchorage, AK, Cole Gillespie of Henderson, NV, and Grace Gillespie of Grand Forks, ND. She will also be deeply missed by her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Duane and Alverda; her son Brian; her sister Julie; her grandparents; and other relatives and friends.

Joy’s warmth and dedication to her family and community will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.

Leona Louise Ness, 92, of Brainerd, MN passed away on March 18, 2018 at the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Facility. Services for Leona will be at 11:00AM, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Brainerd with Pastor Mark Ford officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be 2:00PM, at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls, MN.

Leona was born to Archie and Lillian Noel. She was the seventh child born to this family and was raised by her Great Aunt Louise Hilliard in Lengby, where she attended elementary school. She attended high school in Fosston, graduating in 1943. Leona worked in Bemidji and was briefly married to Leonard Anderson who was lost at sea during WWII. She married Russell Ness on July 14, 1946 and raised two sons, Mark and Bradley. She graduated at the top of her class from the Rogers and Binner Beauty School in Minneapolis. She was self-employed with her own beauty salon for over 10 years and a resident of Brainerd for 71 years. Leona was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brainerd since 1951 and served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Women’s Debra Circle, and had served on the Board of Deacons. She was also a community volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Leona enjoyed entertaining family and friends, poetry and letter writing, needlepoint, knitting, quilting, thrift shopping and antiquing. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren, Andrew, Emily and Kirsten.

Leona is survived by her husband, Russell; son, Brig. Gen. Mark R. Ness (Jill), grandchildren, Andrew of Minneapolis, Emily of Woodbury, and Kirsten of Alexandria; step-grandchildren, Ben, Tom, and John Ramsland. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dr. Bradley D. Ness; and step-mother, Louise Hilliard; and the following members of her childhood adoptive family; Bill and Eva Stave; cousins, Darrel and Bud Stave; Ardelle Danks, Marion Boisjolie, and Maryln Abeldgaard. Also, preceding her were many stray cats whom she adopted over the years. Memorial donations are suggested to be given to First Presbyterian Church.

Leona deeply loved God, her husband and her family. She took great pride in her “welcoming home” and the gracious giving of herself to others. She always said that doing laundry was her “best thing” and certainly kept her family “clean and pressed” in so many ways throughout her valued life. Services have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN. Norma Marguerite Noel was born October 17, 1918 in Thief River Falls, MN. She was the daughter of Clifford and Inga (Brooten) Noel. Norma attended the Thief River Falls schools and later worked at Oakland Park Sanatorium. She married Ben Heyn on February 16, 1939 in Thief River Falls. They lived in Thief River Falls and also spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, after Ben retired. Red Lake Falls was their home for a few years where they enjoyed being members of the Presbyterian Church and loved the friendships they made with the people of Red Lake Falls. Ben passed away June 22, 2006 at home. Norma was the oldest and loving sister of 11 siblings. She cherished the gatherings of her family at the parental home with her brothers and sisters and their families. Ben and Norma were active members of Zion Lutheran Church. Norma was a member of Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed golfing and bowling in her younger years. She was also a member of her special coffee group where the ladies enjoyed many fun times over the years. Her dog, Tootsie, was very special to her. Norma was in assisted living for many years and she always had a pleasant attitude and smile for the staff and visitors. Norma is survived by her son, Roger Heyn (Valerie) and daughter, Patricia Heyn of Thief River Falls. She also had three grandchildren, Steven (Deanna) Heyn of Castle Rock, Colorado, Julie (Doug) Hatch of Stoneham, Colorado, Ann (Edward) Otstott of Plainfield, Illinois. Her great grandchildren are Sara and Nick Heyn, Jessica and Josef Hatch and Edward, Katherine, Emily, Jonathan and Ben Otstott. Her sister, Virginia (Art) Buringrud, of Thief River Falls, also survives her. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Richard, Donald, Charles, Duane, Gerald, William, Robert and Curtis Noel and sisters, Dorothy Pumela, and Beverle Bartot. Her daughter-in-law Nancy Heyn, also preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the staff of Valley Home Assisted Living and Pioneer Memorial Care Center for the loving attention given to Norma.

Matthew “Matt” Don Noel passed away suddenly on May 19th, 2022 at the age of 45.

He was born on December 16th, 1976 to his parents Jeff Noel and Peggy (Brieland) Noel. He was raised in Stephen, MN alongside his younger sister Andrea (Noel) Olsonawski. He played football for the Stephen Tigers throughout his time at Stephen-Argyle Central. He enjoyed 22 years of his life working as an electrician, most notably at Noel Electric with his father and best friend, Jeff. Matt was well known in Stephen for helping everyone and greeting fellow community members with a smile. He spent his free time outdoors, often hunting, trapping, fishing, and woodcarving.

Matt is survived by his daughter, Madison “Madi” Kuznia (Julie Kuznia) and beloved dog, Vega. He is also remembered fondly by his mother Peggy Noel, and his nephews and niece Noel, Aaron, Ryan, and Kate Olsonawski and his brother-in-law Mark Olsonawski. He was preceded in death by his father, Jeff Noel, in 2018, and his sister Andrea (Noel) Olsonawski in 2020.

Matt’s life will be celebrated through a prayer service and a funeral at First Lutheran Church in Stephen, MN. The prayer service will be held on Thursday, May 26th at 7 pm, with visitation beginning at 6 pm. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 27th at 10:30 am with lunch to follow.
