Gerald Joseph Noel
January 2, 1939 — July 12, 2012

Gerald "Jerry" Joseph Noel peacefully passed away July 12, 2012 with all of his family by his side. Jerry, a CSKT tribal member, was born in St. Ignatius, MT on January 2, 1939 and grew up in Polson until his graduation from Polson High School in 1958. In the same year, Jerry joined the California Army National Guard and served 6 years. He also completed training in Diesel Mechanics in Berkeley, CA. It was during these years that Jerry met and married his wife and partner of 51 years. Mae and Jerry had three children: Bill, Sharon, and Fred.

In 1970, Jerry and his family moved back to Polson where he worked for over 30 years with the Kicking Horse Job Corp Center as an Auto and then Diesel Mechanic instructor. He was very proud of these years of service and had a major positive impact on hundreds upon hundreds of primarily young Native American men who completed his course.
Upon retirement from Job Corp in the year 2000, Jerry would spend much of his free time working on his many rental properties. He eventually found work as the 'Princess' tour boat captain and then, later, worked for the Tribal DHRD Transportation Department as a driver.

Jerry's many interests over the years included Christmas tree and firewood cutting, inventing, gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, visiting friends and relatives, reading, carpentry, mechanics, politics and supporting the Democratic Party, spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren, and, enjoying mom's always delicious home cooking.

Funeral services celebrating Jerry's life will be held Thursday, July 19th at 11:00 AM at Grogan Funeral Home in Polson.

James R. Noel

POLSON-James R. "Jim" Noel, 68, the youngest of 14 children born to Laura (Glover) and William H. Noel, passed away in Polson on Wednesday, June 30,2010.

Jim was born in St. Ignatius on Dec. 20,1941, and had been suffering from poor health for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wilbur (Bud); sisters, Leota (Dottie) Joy, both of Polson, and Dorothy (Bob) Watson of Hobson; as well as several brothers and sisters who died in infancy.

Jim was raised in Polson and as a youth was a permanent fixture at the Polson City Dock with his fishing pole. He loved to fish and was well known by Polson residents as he made his way to his favorite fishing spot.
Jim was a 1960 graduate of Polson High School.

In 1961, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Buchanan, a guided missile cruiser. He was stationed at Okinawa and received an honorable discharge as a specialist SK-3 on Jan. 9, 1965.

After serving 36 years and one day at Plum Creek, Jim retired at age 60 in September 2001.

Jim is survived by sisters, Marjorie "Marge" Jones and Barbara Ross, and brother, Gerald "Jerry" Noel, all of Polson; and sister, Patsy "Pat," of Ronan; as well as many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Polson, where military honors will be presented.

Jeffrey Noel, 70, of Stephen, Minnesota passed away at North Valley Health Center in Warren, Minnesota on Wednesday, December 26, 2018.

Jeff was born in Thief River Falls, MN on October 30, 1948. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. Thereafter he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jeff was married to Peggy Noel (Breiland) on December 4, 1971. Jeff was proud of his own electrical business (Noel Electric) that has been operating for more than 40 years.

He was a hard worker and enjoyed his work tremendously. He loved spending time with family and friends, golfing, watching is grandkids' activities, ice fishing, and the Annual Fourtown MEA Weekend was his #1 vacation destination. Throughout the years Jeff served on the church board, fire department, legion board, coached golf, and was Marshall of Stephen Appreciation Days parade.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Matthew, Stephen; a daughter, Andrea (Mark) Olsonawski, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren Madison, Noel, Aaron, Ryan and Kate; and a sister, Linda Lawson, Fargo, ND. Jeff is preceded in death by his parents Don and Tress Noel, brother Anthony Noel, and brother-in-law Robert Lawson.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, December 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church at Stephen. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Rev. Michael Schendel, presiding. Military honors will be accorded by the Stephen American Legion and the Minnesota National Guard. Visitation will be held at First Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 30th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.

Joy Gillespie
October 25, 1944 - February 4, 2025

Joy Diane Noel Gillespie, born on October 25, 1944, in New York City, NY, to Duane and Alverda (Lund) Noel, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Kristin Ostercamp officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Joy was raised in Thief River Falls, MN, where she attended Knox Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962. Shortly after high school, she began working at N.W. Bell and later for School District 564. On October 5, 1963, she married Neil Gillespie, and together they built a life filled with love and cherished memories over their 62 years of marriage.

A woman of many talents and passions, Joy enjoyed crafts, baking, teaching ceramics, gardening, traveling, motorcycle trips with Neil, and attending her grandchildren's activities. She was also a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 117.

Joy is survived by her devoted husband Neil; son Steve Gillespie of Thief River Falls, MN; and three beloved grandchildren: Elle Gillespie of Anchorage, AK, Cole Gillespie of Henderson, NV, and Grace Gillespie of Grand Forks, ND. She will also be deeply missed by her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Duane and Alverda; her son Brian; her sister Julie; her grandparents; and other relatives and friends.

Joy’s warmth and dedication to her family and community will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.

Leona Ness

Leona Louise Ness, 92, of Brainerd, MN passed away on March 18, 2018 at the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Facility. Services for Leona will be at 11:00AM, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Brainerd with Pastor Mark Ford officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be 2:00PM, at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls, MN.

Leona was born to Archie and Lillian Noel. She was the seventh child born to this family and was raised by her Great Aunt Louise Hilliard in Lengby, where she attended elementary school. She attended high school in Fosston, graduating in 1943. Leona worked in Bemidji and was briefly married to Leonard Anderson who was lost at sea during WWII. She married Russell Ness on July 14, 1946 and raised two sons, Mark and Bradley. She graduated at the top of her class from the Rogers and Binner Beauty School in Minneapolis. She was self-employed with her own beauty salon for over 10 years and a resident of Brainerd for 71 years. Leona was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brainerd since 1951 and served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Women’s Debra Circle, and had served on the Board of Deacons. She was also a community volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Leona enjoyed entertaining family and friends, poetry and letter writing, needlepoint, knitting, quilting, thrift shopping and antiquing. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren, Andrew, Emily and Kirsten.

Leona is survived by her husband, Russell; son, Brig. Gen. Mark R. Ness (Jill), grandchildren, Andrew of Minneapolis, Emily of Woodbury, and Kirsten of Alexandria; step-grandchildren, Ben, Tom, and John Ramsland. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dr. Bradley D. Ness; and step-mother, Louise Hilliard; and the following members of her childhood adoptive family; Bill and Eva Stave; cousins, Darrel and Bud Stave; Ardelle Danks, Marion Boisjolie, and Maryln Abeldgaard. Also, preceding her were many stray cats whom she adopted over the years. Memorial donations are suggested to be given to First Presbyterian Church.

Leona deeply loved God, her husband and her family. She took great pride in her “welcoming home” and the gracious giving of herself to others. She always said that doing laundry was her “best thing” and certainly kept her family “clean and pressed” in so many ways throughout her valued life. Services have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.

The cause of death was Liver failure, due to carcinoma of Pancreas with metastasis on 13 September 1974.¹

     Lillian May Noel is the daughter of Norman Robert Noel and Betty Lou Lindgren. Lillian May Noel married Daniel Lynn Pocha on 22 August 1981 at Lewis and Clark Co., Montana.
