Jay Eric Simonsen, 79, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret Simonsen; brother, Winston Simonsen; and sister, Jeanette Holland Ferguson. Jay is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joan Simonsen; sons, “E. J.” Eric Simonsen and wife, Dawn and James Simonsen and wife, Holly; and grandchildren, Megan, Chase and Audrey Simonsen.
Jay was a proud American that served his country in the United States Army with the National Security Agency. He earned his Master of Education at Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary. Jay taught Industrial Arts and Photography for many years and was manager for the Chamber of Commerce in several small communities. As a Pastor, he served for over 33 years at Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Rowlett, Grace Lutheran Church in Midland, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Groves, Grace Lutheran Church in Victoria, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Palacios, Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Angleton. After retirement Jay and Joan enjoyed their retirement home for 13 years in Rosharon. He especially loved boating and fishing throughout his life. Jay’s greatest pleasure was taking small trips with Joan up and down the coast in their Chris Craft Cruiser and enjoying the many cruises throughout the Caribbean. He took interest in being an avid reader especially Naval history during war times. Jay enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren and sharing his love of his childhood Lionel model trains. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Catherine A. Sklenar was born circa November 1874 at Bohemia. She was the daughter of Frank Sklenar and Katherine Hovet. Catharine arrived in US from Bohemia on 28Apr1877, age of 3 years. Catherine A. Sklenar immigrated on 28 April 1877 to New York, New York Co., New York,
The New York City Immigration Passenger Lists, show that on 28 Apr 1877, the vessel Mosel on it's voyage from Bremen, Germany, with the following Sklenar family from Bohemia as passengers: Franz 49 years, Catharine 43 years, Tomas 17 years, Franz 14 years, Johann 9 years and Catharine 3 years. Franz was listed as a workman. Franz Sklenar was listed as passenger number 262 in the passenger list. The Mosel had 436 persons on board.
The Mosel was 3,125 gross tons, length 349 ft x beam 40.3 ft, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron hull, single screw, speed 12 knots, accommodation for 90-1st class passengers, 126-2nd class passengers and 680-3rd class passengers. Built by Caird & Co, Greenock, she was launched on 20th Aug.1872 for North German Lloyd, Bremen. Her maiden voyage started on 4th Jan.1873 when she left Bremen for Southampton and New York and on 11th Dec.1875 she was badly damaged in a bomb explosion in Bremen with the loss of 128 lives.
