John Peter McCarthy was born on 21 February 1898 at Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota. He was the son of Jeremiah McCarthy and Mary C. McGinnis. John Peter McCarthy was baptized at Catholic Church, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.2 He married Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke, daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball, on 2 November 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.2 John Peter McCarthy died on 17 January 1956 at Winona General Hospital, Winona, Winona Co., Minnesota, at age 57. He was buried on 19 January 1956 at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota; John buried in Section A-54 of Maple Lawn Cemetery.3
The cause of death was Heart Attack. John Peter McCarthy was a Converted from Catholic to Lutheran.

John was born in a house with an attending midwife in Faribault, MN. He attended Catholic school in Faribault until he was in the ninth grade when he transferred to Faribault High School, completing the ninth grade. When John was eleven or twelve he worked for farmers hoeing weeds. He worked in a furniture factory for a year until he was sixteen. To enlist in the army, John lied about his age saying he was already seventeen. He served in the army for three years being stationed in Texas, Germany, France and other foreign countries. He attained the level of first sergeant before being honorably discharged. For one year his duty was to guard German prisoners who were called Jerries. John was nicknamed the "wood pile sergeant" because for punishments he would have the prisoners saw wood. After the war was over, he remained in France in the army for a time. For spending money he entered boxing matches receiving fifty dollars for every fight he entered. He would send some of this money home to help out his parents.
John returned home to Faribault and was a wood worker at the truck factory in the 1920 census. He attended six weeks of catechism instruction in the Lutheran Church, joining the Lutheran Church shortly after he and Helen were married. John was a fireman in Faribault for several years until John and Helen moved to Wausau, WI in 1926. He then acquired a part time job as a postal clerk for six years. Since he was a substitute clerk and not employed full time, he also had jobs at a battery factory where he made batteries, at a paper mill moving large stones, and at a hotel as a night clerk during the six years at Wausau. After John developed rheumatoid arthritis and heart trouble in Wausau, he had to quit working and the family moved back to Faribault where Helen acquired a job working for the WPA. In 1937, the family purchased a farm three miles from Stockton, MN. The farm had forty acres with fifteen of the acres being tillable and the rest being wooded and hilly. Besides raising crops, the family raised cattle, ducks, geese, chickens and vegetables.
In 1947, the family moved to Winona, MN. Helen had a job in the glove factory for a year and a half and then began working at Schafers Cleaners as a presser for the next eighteen years. During this time in Winona, John was a real estate salesman for about two years. They purchased a home at 256 W. Fourth St. and also a house at 227 W. Third St., which was remodeled and made into rental apartments. The family home on 256 W. Fourth Street also had two apartments upstairs which were rented out to single women. John developed a blood clot in his leg but did not go to the doctor, using home remedies. In two weeks time, the blood clot moved to his heart and he died.
John was nicknamed Jack. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars having served in World War I. John received military rites at the graveside.
The above information was received from Ann Alice (KRANZ) KURTH on 04 Sep 1992. John Peter McCarthy also went by the name of Jack.

Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke1,2

F, #222, b. 30 September 1900, d. 23 December 1997

Helen McCarthy in 1977
Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke was born on 30 September 1900 at Morristown Twsp., Rice Co., Minnesota. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.3 She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke married John Peter McCarthy, son of Jeremiah McCarthy and Mary C. McGinnis, on 2 November 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.3 Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke died on 23 December 1997 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at age 97.4 She was buried on 30 December 1997 at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.4
Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke was a Housewife. Her married name was McCarthy. She lived circa August 1994 at Gresham, Multnomah Co., Oregon; living with her daughter Beatrice. Her Social Security Number was 477-24-0809, issued in Minnesota. She lived in October 1996 at Glendoveer Retirement Villa, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. Helen until Summer 1994, lived at 104 Main St., #504, Winona, MN. Helena (Helen) Minnie Mathilda Velzke was a Lutheran.

Helen was the ninth child in a family of eleven children. Because of the lack of beds for all the family, Helen and her sister Anna slept with their father and their sister Erna slept with their mother until Helen was about seven years old. Their Grandfather Kuball lived with them and also slept on the living room couch. Once a year the family would go to town to buy new clothes.
One year Helen remembers that her mother purchased a red sweater with a sailor collar and a coat with four or five capes on it and as long as her ankles. It was a very warm coat, but was so heavy she could hardly walk. Helen remembers some childhood experiences with her brothers and sisters. When she was about five or six years old, Helen, Erna and Wally were in the house with their grandfather while their mother and father were in the fields, and their other brothers were at school. They decided to clean all the cupboards out and surprise their mother. They could not find any old rags, so they used some old green window shades. Upon getting wet, the shades faded and all the cupboards ended up green on the inside. Their older sister, Martha, had to clean all the cupboards over again. When Helen was about seven or eight years old, she and Wally and about eight other neighbors and cousins were at a cousins house. There was an old wood stove outside in a canvas tent, used for cooking food for the pigs. The children put hay and wood in the stove, started the fire and put potatoes on the stove in an old kettle to cook. The stove became red hot, cooking the potatoes, but fortunately did not burn down the tent. The children enjoyed dogs and cats as pets on the farm. One time Helen, Erna and Wally were each given a puppy as a pet of their own. One day they took the puppies up an outside stairway to the loft in the chicken coop. Helen's dog accidentally fell from the second story to the ground. Helen rushed down, picked up the puppy and held it in her lap. The puppy proceeded to vomit all over Helen, and she did not care for dogs after that experience.
For recreation, the children would often walk for miles to friends homes to play. Helen was born with a handicap in the right leg and arm, but could keep up with her brothers and sisters equally well. The children attended a one room country school containing grades one through eight. Helen finished the eighth grade. There was not enough money for books and clothes to send the children on to high school. When the family lived in Faribault, the children had a two and a half mile walk to school. When the weather was bad, the children remained at home. When the family lived in Morristown, they attended the public school a half a mile away in the winter. In the spring and fall when the weather was milder, they attended the Lutheran school a mile and a half away.
Helen's parents both attended school in Germany, and felt education was important, encouraging their children to attend. Helen remembers one time in school when she was about ten years old and was put on the "whisper" bench when the teacher thought she had been misbehaving. Feeling the punishment was unjustified, Helen began to cry. When she would not stop crying, the teacher slapped her hands with a strap. Helen was so upset, that she ran home at lunch time. Later, her father came to school and told the teacher that he could not spank his children again. Helen was very good at memorizing and could sing many songs from memory. She had difficulty learning in school. Her sister Anna would sit in a corner at home with her and help Helen memorize her lessons for school. She did not learn to well until she was 15 years old. The letters just did not make any sense to her. Today we would say Helen has a learning disability which she learned to overcome by herself.
When she was sixteen, Helen did light housework and was a cook at Severy School for two years. At the age of eighteen, she worked in a shoe factory and at the St. Paul Hotel in St. Paul, MN, as a maid. When she was 22, she married John McCarthy. Helen was always very active in church work. She attended St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Winona and was a member of the women's guild helping assemble the monthly newsletter, serve dinners and helping with the bazaars. She also belonged to the guild at the Sauer Memorial Home for the elderly where she helped with entertaining the residents, playing bingo with them and helped with the annual craft bazaar. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren and relatives in various parts of the United States.
When she was seventy-one, Helen started to take painting lessons at Valley View Tower in Winona. She specialized in acrylics and oils. Helen painted many lovely pictures which she hung in her home as well as gave to family and friends. Helen lived in the home on Fourth Street until she sold it in October of 1979, and moved into an apartment at Winhaven Court on Main Street. Following in email from Ann Kurth in Jan 2007:
My parents decided that they wanted to sell their home in St. Charles, MN and move to Missouri to be closer to my sister Kay Lieb. They had been talking about moving for quite a few years and then decided this was the year to move. Their mobile home sold in just two weeks, they packed up their belonging and moved to a small duplex in a community called Grain Valley, MO, just 5 miles from where my sister lives. They unloaded their things, got a few things settled, became residents of MO and then headed south to work on different projects for their church. They did all of this the beginning of October. It is still hard for me to believe that my parents would move away from Minnesota where they have lived for over 80 years and take up residence in a new state. They did this in preparation for the time when they won’t be so spry and not able to travel around the country in their motor home. I hope I have as much energy when I reach their age.2

He lived in January 2007 at Grain Valley, Jackson Co., Missouri.2

Following is the obituary for Frederick Kranz:

Frederick Kranz
(Posted By Royer on January 21, 2015)

Frederick Kranz, 91, of Grain Valley, Missouri, passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Blue Springs, MO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24th at Timothy Lutheran Church, Blue Springs. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be held at a later date in Saratoga Cemetery, Saratoga, MN. Memorial gifts may be designated for Timothy Lutheran Church.

Fred was born March 25, 1923, on the family farm in Dover, Minnesota, the son of John and Margaret Kranz.
Fred was baptized in Christ on May 27, 1923 and confirmed his faith in Jesus Christ on December 14, 1941 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, Winona, MN. He graduated from High School in Dover, MN and married Helen Veronica McCarthy on July 10, 1943 in Winona, Minnesota.

He spent 51 years farming in Minnesota. He created Diamond K Enterprises distributing organic products in all 50 states and internationally. Beyond farming he was self-employed in sales and agricultural-related services. After he left farming he used his many skills serving the Lord as a volunteer for MAPS: building churches, bible schools and camps, and Teen Challenge. His volunteer service to the Lord included more than 80 projects in the United States and 3 internationally. He also volunteered locally with Habitat for Humanity.

Moving to Grain Valley, Missouri in 2006, he joined Timothy Lutheran Church in 2007. He participated in Pairs & Spares and Bible Studies. He was faithful in worship, intentionally setting aside Sunday as a Sabbath day of rest.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, his brother John and his sister Margaret.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helen Kranz of Grain Valley, MO; his sister Alice Rainwater of Fresno, CA; his children: Joan (Jay) Simonsen of Rosharon, TX; Kay (Francis) Lieb of Blue Springs, MO; Ed (Susan) Kranz of Ravendale, CA; Ann Kurth of Denver, CO; Jack (LaDonna) Kranz of St. Charles, MN; his 10 grandchildren and his 30 great-grandchildren.

Having received the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, Fred is now celebrating the victory of eternal life with Jesus.
