Obituary for Richard Joseph Havel:

Dr. Richard J. Havel
February 20, 1925 - April 9, 2016

Dr. Richard Joseph (Dick) Havel, renowned research scientist, devoted husband and father passed away quietly at his home in Greenbrae on April 9th. Dick was born to Joseph and Anna (Nan) Havel in Seattle, Washington where he attended Sealth High School, played the clarinet and excelled in mathematics and science. He attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and met his wife Virginia (Gini). They fell in love after their first date and were married in 1945. He earned a medical degree along with a Masters degree in Chemistry at University of Oregon Medical School in 1949. After a residency in Internal Medicine at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City, Dick began his long career in biomedical research at the National Heart Institute of the Public Health Service in Bethesda, Maryland. He joined the faculty in the School of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco, in 1956 where he continued his groundbreaking research on lipid metabolism and lipoprotein biology. His research had a profound impact on the understanding of human disease including the role of disorders of lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Dr. Havel refined and optimized the methodology for separating good cholesterol (HDL) from bad cholesterol (LDL) and recognized the role that the different fractions of lipoproteins play in heart disease. His paper on the lipoproteins in human serum published in 1955 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation remains among the most cited publications in the field of lipid biology. His research accomplishments also include one of the first studies demonstrating that lowering LDL cholesterol in the blood led to a reduction of atherosclerosis.

He served as Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at UCSF from 1973 to 1992 where he trained numerous postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty in biomedical research. He was a mentor and advisor on cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism to Drs. Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1984 and with whom Dr. Havel published several original scientific papers and a seminal chapter on Lipoproteins and Lipid Transport in the textbook Metabolic Control and Disease. Dr. Havel's career included sabbaticals at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. During his career, he published over 300 scientific papers and was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences in 1983 and the Institute of Medicine in 1989. He served as Editor-in-Chief and Chair of the Advisory Board for the Journal of Lipid Research. He was also active in the organization of the Deuel Conference on Lipids and the conference has included the annual "Havel Lecture" since 2002. He received many awards and honors including the Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nutrition Research and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis.

After returning from sabbatical in Sweden in 1962, he and Gini lived in Ross, California, where they raised four children. He was also a longtime resident of Inverness, California near the Point Reyes National Seashore, where he and Gini built a home overlooking Tomales Bay. Here, Dick loved entertaining and lively games of tennis with family and friends. While living in West Marin, he was an avid gardener, he enjoyed hiking, birding and foraging for wild mushrooms. He also had a longtime love of classical music and he and Gini were subscribing members of the San Francisco Symphony. Following his retirement, he remained active in the lipoprotein field and played a good game of tennis well into his 80's. He and Gini traveled all over the world, and particularly enjoyed visiting places with a rich natural history of flora and fauna. He is survived by Gini, his wife of nearly seventy years, his four children, Chris (Mill Valley, CA), Tim (Boston, MA), Peter (Davis, CA), and Julianne (San Rafael, CA), as well as his three grandchildren, Jocelyn, Tyler, and Cameron, and his niece, Tracy Grant, and grandniece, Mélanie Grant, of Nicasio, CA. Dick will be missed by his family and many friends and colleagues who will remember him as a kind and gentle man with a keen sense of humor along with a supportive and mentoring spirit. A memorial honoring Dr. Havel will be held at UCSF within the next 2-3 months followed on a later date by another memorial for family and friends in Marin County.

Gail Patricia Headrick was born on 3 December 1937 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.1,2 She was the daughter of Donald Eugene Headrick and Mildred Mae Howerton. Gail Patricia Headrick graduated in 1955 at Lompoc High School, Lompoc, Santa Barbara Co., California.1 She married Garry Edward Benson on 17 September 1960 at Santa Barbara Co., California. Gail Patricia Headrick died on 8 February 2015 at California at age 77.2

Following obituary for Gail Benson:

Gail Patricia Benson 1937 - 2015
December 03, 1937 - February 08, 2015

Gail (Headrick) Benson was born in Los Angeles on December 3, 1937 to Donald and Mildred (Howerton) Headrick. Ten days later, the three of them moved back to Mildred’s home town of Lompoc. Twelve years later, younger brother Dennis came along and Gail became the default baby sitter.

She lived a full life and often reminisced about her Lompoc childhood – stories of living in an apartment in the historic Rudolph Mansion; stories of her doting father who considered her “Daddy’s little girl;” stories of her grandparents, Frank and Bertha Howerton and their “ranch” on West Ocean Ave; stories of her colorful cowboy uncles; and stories of her many cousins and their escapades.

Gail graduated from Lompoc High School in 1955 and then went on to Allan Hancock College to study Journalism and English. As a member of the Lompoc High School Blue Ribbon Band, she played Oboe, Saxophone and Glockenspiel. In her younger years, she took piano lessons from Faye Porter and later became a talented organist, playing background music for the annual Alpha Club Flower Show and for many local fashion shows. She became acquainted with Pat Farage, who managed the local Baldwin Piano and Organ Studio, and soon began teaching organ techniques to eager students.

Her father served as a volunteer firefighter with the Lompoc Fire Department. It was there where she caught the eye of a young firefighter. As they say, he pursued her until she caught him. Gail and that young firefighter, Garry Benson, were married in 1960. Garry later admitted that he had first met her when she was twelve years old, while she was visiting her aunt and uncle, Ruby and Smitty Howerton, in Goleta.

Never one to avoid hard work, Gail spent a couple of summers staying with her aunt and uncle, Edith and Harry Sorensen in Grover City, while earning money picking strawberries. She began her formal working career at Miller Pharmacy, after which she was employed in the traffic department at Johns-Manville. Her last “paying” job was in the family business, Lompoc Valley Stationers and Bookstore, in the mid-1970s.

Her passion was genealogy. The research fascinated and challenged her. She documented both sides of her family history and, to her dismay, found no Native American blood and, most importantly, no horse thieves.
She recently received her 50 year pin from the Native Daughters of the Golden West and was a charter member of the Lompoc Valley Historical Society and member of the now inactive Lompoc Pioneer Society.

Gail and Garry entered the dog show world showing Papillons. They were not experienced handlers, but managed to show champion dogs alongside professionals with many years of experience. She is survived by three of her beloved fur babies; Corky, Queso and Cowboy.

Gail will always be remembered for her dedication to family. She was one who could be critical and make light of family members, but woe be to those outsiders who did the same. Those critics would soon discover her “other side” as she defiantly defended her family. Opinionated and outspoken are the two qualities that summed her up.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, all her aunts and uncles, and her “adopted” brother, Keith Parsley. She is survived by her husband, Garry Benson and brother, Dennis Headrick of Lompoc, her “adopted” kids, Larry and Carla Harrison of Georgia, her beloved Headrick and Howerton cousins, and the Parsley family of Orcutt, whom she considered her extended family and who accepted her as one of their own.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, February 20 at 2 p.m. in the pavilion at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lompoc Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 88, Lompoc, CA 93438, or an animal welfare organization of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck Lind Mortuary.
