William Tyler Duval Harn married Mary Agnes Duer, daughter of Johann Christian Friedrich Duer and Mary Stanley, on 11 July 1861 at Rose Hill, Harris Co., Texas.3 William Tyler Duval Harn died on 28 May 1897 at McLennan Co., Texas, at age 59.3 He was buried on 29 May 1897 at Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, McIennan Co., Texas.3
William Tyler Duval Harn was a Farmer, Bookkeeper. He appeared on the census of 18 October 1860 at Houston, Harris Co., Texas; lists A.D. Harn as 24 years old, born in Maryland, hotel keeper; his mother, Zerua 46 years old born in Maryland; his brother Wm T.D. Harn 22 years old and born in Maryland. He lived in 1893 at Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.
Mary Agnes Duer Harn filed for a Texas Confederate Widow's Application for a Pension on 27 Oct 1923, it was approved on 08 Nov 1923, and a pension was allowed from 01 Sep 1923 until her death in 1925. This pension was "For Use of Widows of Soldiers Who Are in Indigent Circumstances."
In the pension application she made a series of sworn statements:
That her husband, William Tyler Duval Harn, who died on 28 May 1897. His command was originally organized in Harris Co., Texas. He served four years; enlisted first of was, discharged 25 May 1865. He was in the Calvary service as a First Lieutenant when company organized, made Captain on 31 Jul 1864, the rank he continued until the end of the war.
Part of the pension application included an Affidavit of Witnesses for Bradford Hancock taken on 28 Aug 1923. He stated the following:
"I served in the same Regiment with Capt. W. Tyler D. Harn, being 26th, Texas Calvary, in which X.B. DeBray was Colonel, Capt. Harn was a First Lieutenant of Texas, E. 26th, Texas Calvary, DeBray Regiment, and was promoted to Captain of said Company, July 31st, 1864. I know these facts from a personal acquaintance with Capt. Harn while in the service of the Confederate Army, and for many years while we both lived in Texas after the war, the name is spelled Horn in some of the rolls that were made of this Regiment, but Harn is the proper name, and W. Tyler D. Harn was the person enlisted in said Company, as the W. Tyler D. Harn in said Company and Regiment."
Part of the pension application included copy of the military record of W. Tyler D. Harn:
"War Department, The Adjutant General's Office, Washington, 02 Nov 1923
William T.D. Harn, 1st. Lt. & Capt. Co. E, 26th. (Debrays) Tex. Cav. C.S.A. Enlisted Oct. 1, also shown, Oct. 5, 1861, at Hockley, and on muster roll Jan. & Feb. 1864 (last on file) is shown, Absent detached service, as A.Q.M. at Perrys Landing Dec. 13, 1863, by order of Maj. Gen. Magruder. The name T.D. Harn, Capt. Co. E, 26th. Tex. Cav. Appear and he is shown present for duty at Richmond, on Regtl Return for Mar. 1865. No later record has been found."
Part of the pension application included copy of burial notice for Col. Tyler D. Harn:
"Waco, Texas, May 29, The funeral and burial of Col. Tyler D. Harn, this afternoon, at Oakwood, was attended by his comrades of Pat Uleburne Camp, and veterans of neighboring camps, as well as Union Veterans. Col. Harn's title as Colonel was a militia preferment by the governor after peace was restored.
He served during the war in the twenty-sixth Texas Calvary, commanded by DeBray, and by gallantry won a Captain's commission. He brought away from the army, after the surrender, his broadsword, spurs, camp-knife, and the colors of his regiment, all of which were in sight and lent interest to the funeral today. After the stroke of paralysis yesterday, he never recovered.
The last few murmurings that escaped his lips related to incidents of the war in which he participated. His walls were hung with pictures of Generals Lee, Stuart Jackson, Beauregard and other Southern commanders. All his surroundings were indicative of the bent of his mind, which was military and Southern to a high degree.
He was buried near the Confederate monument, Rev. Frank Page, the chaplain of the Pat Cleburne Camp, officiating, and his grave was decorated by his comrades of the group and the veterans of the blue, by whom he was highly esteemed."3
