Rices Landing native worked in Washington, D.C. Constance Toland Huffman, 75, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., died Monday, May 16, 2005, in her home. She was born October 10, 1929, in Rices Landing, a daughter of Walter S. Toland and Hazel Holmes Toland Firestone. Mrs. Huffman was a graduate of Jefferson High School. She was a retired director of policy and procedures at Link in Washington D.C., which provides flight simulators for the U.S. government. Mrs. Huffman was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Lake Havasu City.
She enjoyed playing piano, guitar and golf. She was first married to Melvin Grooms, who is deceased. On June 17, 1968, she married Loy H. Huffman, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Donna Nickelson of Florida; a son, Michael S. Grooms and wife Chrissie of Florida; two stepdaughters, Patricia Goodloe and husband Walter of Hanover and Cecilia Huffman of Virginia; two grandchildren, Shaleen Cousins and husband Matt and George Viverette; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred "Midgie" Harn of Waynesburg and Theda R. Welling of Rices Landing. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 22, in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.

     Mildred C. Toland was born on 18 January 1920 at Rice's Landing, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.^2,1 She was the daughter of Walter Sherwood Toland and Hazel Holmes.¹ Mildred C. Toland married Robert Glen Gallentine on 10 June 1940 at Windridge, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.¹ Mildred C. Toland married Donald Aden Harn, son of Wesley (Aden) Harn and Sarah Catherine Lilley, on 10 August 1963.² Mildred C. Toland died on 27 July 2005 at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Greene Co., Pennsylvania, at age 85.³
     Her married name was Gallentine.¹ She graduated in 1940 at Jefferson High School, Pennsylvania.¹ Mildred C. Toland also went by the name of Midgie.⁴ Her married name was Harn. She lived in May 1995 at P.O. Box 36, Mather, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.

     Walter Sherwood Toland married Hazel Holmes.

     Elizabeth J. Tolle was born circa 1810 at Kentucky.¹ She was the daughter of Nathaniel Tolle and Prudence (?).¹ Elizabeth J. Tolle married Daniel Redman circa 1836.

John Barnett Tonkin married Nancy Stewart Sturdevant on 20 October 1945 at Clarksburg, Harrison Co., West Virginia.^1,2 John Barnett Tonkin married Betty Roland Preston in November 1995.² John Barnett Tonkin died on 23 March 2006 at Clarksburg, Harrison Co., West Virginia, at age 86.²
     He lived in 1962 at Clarksburg, Harrison Co., West Virginia.

John Barnett "Bud" Tonkin went with peace to meet his God on March 23, 2006 at his Clarksburg home following a brief illness. Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on May 16, 1919, Mr. Tonkin was preceded in death by his parents, Loring Lombard Tonkin and Norma Smith Tonkin.
Bud attended Randolph-Macon Academy, Mercersburg Academy, Lehigh University and West Virginia University where he graduated as an engineer. He began his career at Hope Natural Gas Company in 1945 and he retired from Consolidated Gas Supply Corporation as a Division IV Manager in 1981.
Mr. Tonkin served his country during World War II in England with the 8th Air Force, 457th Bomb Group as a First Lieutenant, and was a bombardier/navigator on the B-17 Flying Fortresses. Bud successfully completed 35 combat missions over Nazi Germany and was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, five Air Medals, The Presidential Citation and four Bronze Stars.
Twice married, Mr. Tonkin was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Sturdevant, whom he married in 1945. They had three children: son, Loring L. "Tim" Tonkin and wife Veronica and grandchildren Holly and Luke of Charleston, WV; son, John B. Tonkin, Jr. and grandson Jeb of Weston, WV; and daughter, Nancy S. Tonkin of Nitro, WV.
Mr. Tonkin married Betty Rolland Preston in November of 1995. Stepchildren are Sharon A. Ullom and husband John of Bay Village, OH; Layne R. Harper and husband Herb and step-grand daughter Meredith of New Orleans, LA; and David A. Preston, wife Pamela and step-grand children Jason Preston and Jacquelyn Fleece of Clarksburg/Morgantown, WV.
Mr. Tonkin is survived by two sisters: Norma (Dicky) Brigham of Williamsburg, VA; Jean Brinkley of New Market, MD; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by three sisters; Margaret (Tauby) Crumrine of Scottsdale, AZ; Mary (Lindy) Davis of Naples, FL and Martha (Pug) Spelsberg of Baltimore, MD.
Bud was an Episcopalian by faith, and a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Clarksburg. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Clarksburg Country Club since 1950 and also a member of The Vines Country Club in Ft. Myers, FL where he and Betty were winter residents.
In addition to his passion for golf, Bud loved to play cards, fish the streams of West Virginia, garden and work in his yard.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2006 in the Christ Episcopal Church, 6th and Main Street, Clarksburg with Rev. Michael Jupin presiding. Interment will be in the Bridgeport Cemetery.

Loring and Norma eloped right after he graduated from Cornell University. He was President and Chairman of the Board of Hope Natural Gas Company (aka Consolidated Natural Gas).²
